Efé's Journey

Who needs an iPad?

Recently, I've read TLC's blog about IPad here. And I want to add on to it.

I have purchased an IPad (specifically M1 12.9" Pro) and I have been using it for a while now. And I have asked this question to myself on different forms for a long time. First of all, I am a language learner, a student and a reader.

I use my iPad primarily for language learning. I think Apple's features that lets you to search a word in multiple dictionaries by just selecting it and just selecting a sentence and being able to translate it is really useful. Being said, I am also a Linux user and some apps that are really important to my learning workflow are not available on Linux - sometimes even Windows and MacOS too. For example, Pleco.

I read all of my ebooks on my iPad because my phone is too small, I hate my computer's design and it is too big, also I hate the feel of (some) papers and printed books can be really expensive considering I like to read in a lot of languages and shipping fees sometimes may exceed the actual price of the book.

I do have all of my textbooks on my iPad. I used to take notes on my iPad with my stylus but I simply grew out of it and found out that stylus-written notes had no significant difference when compared to handwritten notes. Ok, maybe some advantages overall but they are not that considerable for me. My opinions about taking notes on iPad is subject to change since I want to get a great keyboard to use with my iPad. Maye then I can start using some sort of note taking methods - like Obsidian - on it.

But as you can probably guess, although it may seem like its a lot of use cases, when you use an iPad, you can see that it really is collecting dust over time. Yeah, I have an iPhone but iPad is truly useful when you have a MacBook.

My original plan was just using it as a media station and my studies. I do use my iPad for studying, and I like it quite a lot. I agree what Matt's said, I like the device itself, and the OS is fiiiine. But I don't use it as a media station. Why you may ask? Because I find iPad too big.

Again, I actually like it being big, I like the more-squared ratio, but when I watch videos on a portable device, I like it being portable when I watch the actual video. May it is possible to simply bring your iPad with you, I prefer my phone.

It may be an habit that I built over the years I had only a phone and a computer, who knows? That's being said, I do like my iPad, and if I didn't have one, I would still want one.
